Mike is a 2nd year medical student at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. He grew up in the small town of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and attended college at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh where he graduated with a finance degree. In 2018, he moved down to Birmingham, Alabama, with the dual purpose of accepting a job at United Healthcare and relocating to an area where he could follow his passion of competitive fishing. After months of deliberation, he realized a multitude of experiences had left a burning desire to pursue the patient side of healthcare. He decided to resign from his finance job and go back to school to pursue medicine. While living in Alabama and engaging with a variety of rural service projects throughout the state, he realized many places he visited mirrored the communities he visited while competitive fishing. Both were composed of people who shared similar circumstances of low healthcare literacy, a high susceptibility to adverse skin manifestations, and limited access to physicians. Mike has a passion for expanding healthcare access and education, especially surrounding skin cancer prevention and management. Outside of medical school he enjoys executing different entrepreneurial side hustles, volunteering in the Black Belt of Alabama, and watching movies at home.
